Wakefield, Edward Gibbon
(20 mar. 1796, Londres, Inglaterra–16 may. 1862, Wellington, Nueva Zelanda).

Colonizador británico de Australia meridional y de Nueva Zelanda. Después de examinar los problemas del sistema penal, entre ellos el traslado forzado de presidiarios a colonias británicas, escribió A Letter from Sydney [Carta desde Sydney] (1829) y propuso la colonización mediante la venta de pequeñas propiedades de tierra a ciudadanos comunes. Influyó en la fundación de Australia meridional como un asentamiento no penal. Como organizador y administrador de la New Zealand Company (1838–58), envió colonos a establecerse en Nueva Zelanda y obligó al gobierno británico a reconocer la colonia. Como consejero del conde de Durham, influyó en el informe que llevó a la unión de Alto y Bajo Canadá. Fundó un asentamiento de la Iglesia de Inglaterra en Canterbury, Nueva Zelanda (1847).
